
Tacloban City – The National Maritime Polytechnic (NMP) serving the Filipino seafarers and the maritime industry since 1978, marked its 44th Founding Anniversary in a celebration held last 05-06 May 2022 at Kuting Reef Resort, Macrohon, Southern Leyte with the theme: “NMP@44: Navigating Through Current Challenges, Embracing Transformations in Maritime Training and Research and Fostering Resiliency and Excellence in Filipino Seafarers.”
As a kickstart towards the celebration, a Thanksgiving Mass was held on 02 May 2022 at the lobby of the Administration Building of NMP attended by the key personnel and employees.
Gender and Development (GAD) Fun shops were organized prior to the program on 05 May, which gave the employees some time to bond and build camaraderie through a series of games played by group that encouraged teamwork and synergy. A trivia contest was also facilitated by the GAD committee while en route to the venue and the prizes were awarded to the winners upon their arrival.
In his message, Executive Director Joel B. Maglunsod expressed his gratitude to the relentless efforts shown by each and every employee of NMP which resulted to the significant growth and development of the NMP through the 44 years of continuous support to the Filipino seafarers and the maritime industry. With the enactment of thess law creating the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) last December 2021, NMP’s resilience will once again be tested, however, he is confident that NMP can always rise up to any challenges bound to face ahead.
“Together, we remember the many challenges that we surpassed and the endurance and growth that we experienced as an institution. From our beginnings as one of the first maritime training centers in the country to our significant contributions to the maritime industry – we can proudly say that we have indeed succeeded in bringing NMP at the forefront of maritime training and research,” ED Maglunsod said.
Commodore Eustacio Nimrod P. Enriquez who was present during the event representing the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), a member of NMP Board of Trustees (BOT), congratulated NMP for its outstanding accomplishments over the years, likewise, to let the impending transitions to the DMW be an opportunity for growth of the institution. Also, in attendance was Former Executive Director Genis S. Murallos who served NMP from October 15, 2007 to January 17, 2008. In his message, he expressed that the future is bright for NMP as it joins the DMW.
The eventful occasion was witnessed by NMP’s key personnel and employees, both the regular and job order workers including the staff of NMP Manila Office headed by their Officer-in-Charge, Ms. Evelyn Futol,
In addition, Dr. Conrado F. Oca, President of the Associated Marine Officers’ and Seamen’s Union of the Philippines (AMOSUP), a member of the NMP BOT, Regional Director Renato Pablo, Jr. of the International Seafarers Welfare and Assistance Network (ISWAN), and NMP Deputy Executive Director Mayla N. Macadawan, each sent their virtual greetings to NMP.
While some of NMP’s former employees and Executive Directors (ED) who were not physically present in the event also conveyed their virtual salutations and congratulatory messages. Among them were Cmdr. Ronaldo R. Abella, MSc., ED from August 2, 1999 – March 21, 2001; Dir. Dalisay Sevilla, ED from March 15, 2002- July 18, 2007; Atty. Forter G. Puguon, Sr., ED from February 1, 2012-September 20, 2014; Dir. Manuel C. Roldan, CESO III, OIC ED from October 1, 2014-January 15, 2017, Mr. Nelson E. Pino, former Head of Cash Unit, and Dr. Ariel Raynes, a Guest trainer.
Surpassing the 44 years is an affirmation of NMP’s commitment of service to the Filipino seafarers and the maritime industry, and will continue to navigate and embrace the changes and challenges that will confront the agency in achieving institutional goals, targets and priorities.
