TACLOBAN CITY – The National Maritime Polytechnic (NMP), with the direction to strengthen the competence and competitiveness of Filipino seafarers in the international labor market and to provide value-adding courses effectively enhancing the skills of seafarers specifically in the area of technical writing, the NMP Course Development Team (CDT) works on the development of Technical Writing for Seafarers course for offering by 2022.

A review and verification of the Course Package was conducted on July 16, 2021 wherein the outputs from the course Subject-Matter-Expert (SME), Dr. Ariel Raynes was presented and discussed.

With English as the common language at sea, bridging language gaps through proficiency in the English language especially in international vessels where onboard are multilingual crews is highly essential.

The said course will provide a useful introduction for those with limited writing experience and enhance the technical writing skills of those who have been writing reports for some time, especially officers who are involved in the preparation of maritime documentations, emails and various correspondences either ship to ship, onboard ship or ship to shore communication.

The realization of the course will help avoid ship-crew misunderstanding, conflict and accidents and maintain safety of life and property at sea through clear and comprehensive written communication.

The Pilot Testing and validation of reviewed Course Package is tentatively scheduled on August 16-20, 2021.

“With excellent English and writing skills, Filipinos will continue to be the “choice seafarers” and Philippines will maintain its position as the top provider of seafarers in the world.”, NMP Executive Director Joel B. Maglunsod stated.
