NMP ED Joel B. Maglunsod delivering his message during flag raising ceremony in celebration of the International Women’s Day on March 8, 2021
On 08 March 2021, in celebration of the International Women’s Day (IWD), NMP Executive Director Joel B. Maglunsod during the flag raising ceremony highlighted that the promotion of effective gender and development program has to be the responsibility of all individuals – not just of women but including men.
He also mentioned that towards the end of the century, women together with other sectors of the society have fought the battle of women empowerment that gave impetus to the long campaign for equality of rights among men and women in terms of better pay and right to vote.
In his closing statement, he said that men need to be engaged as gender advocates and be champions of change towards accelerating gender equality.
Moreover, with sustained commitment and hope for gender equality and along with the need to address gender related problems and issues in the maritime sector, specifically the low level of awareness on GAD concepts among seafarers caused by lack of interventions for seafarers as a specialized workforce group, the NMP came up with a training course on the Gender Sensitivity Training for Seafarers (GSTS). This is a non-STCW training course developed by NMP for its clients, the Filipino seafarers. The course was designed to increase the level of awareness and appreciation on GAD concepts as well as to encourage advocacy among Filipino seafarers, specifically NMP trainees, on the promotion of gender equality directed towards developing a gender sensitive maritime sector.
