TACLOBAN CITY – The National Maritime Polytechnic (NMP) is set to present the findings from its latest research study, “Assessing the Mental Health and Well-being of Filipino Seafarers,” at the upcoming NMP Maritime Research Forum on June 20, 2024, at the Ocean and Fountain Park Philippines Inc. (Hotel H2O, Manila Ocean Park).
The study aims to shed light on the pressing mental health issues faced by Filipino seafarers, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Recent studies have highlighted a concerning trend: an increase in mental disorder cases and suicide rates among seafarers. The nature of their work, which involves long periods of isolation and exposure to the challenging environment of the vast ocean, naturally predisposes them to various mental, psychosocial, and physical stresses. These factors can significantly impact their mental health.
The COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated these challenges. Reports indicate heightened levels of stress, anxiety, depression, and withdrawal among seafarers during the pandemic. Additionally, there have been alarming instances of seafarers developing tendencies to harm themselves or others and experiencing mental abuse from superiors. Given these concerning trends and the lack of comprehensive data on suicide cases and mental disorder cases among Filipino seafarers, the Department of Migrant Workers-NMP (DMW-NMP) initiated this pivotal study. The goal is to provide the Philippine maritime industry with a clearer understanding of the mental health status of seafarers and to recommend necessary interventions.
NMP invites all maritime industry stakeholders to join the research forum, where the findings of the study will be presented in detail. This event will provide a platform for discussing the implications of the study and exploring strategies to enhance the mental health and well-being of Filipino seafarers.
