NMP Executive Staff, Section and Unit Heads during the Exit Meeting
The National Maritime Polytechnic (NMP), a premier government-owned maritime training and research institution in the country located at Brgy. Cabalawan, Tacloban City and its Liaison Office in Makati City underwent the recertification audit of its Quality Management System (QMS) under ISO 9001: 2015 Standard by the Anglo Japanese American (AJA) Registrar Limited on 05-06 March 2018.
NMP’s quality manuals, procedures and other system documentation have been reviewed by three AJA Auditors led by Ms. Mercedelin Flores against the requirements of the new ISO standards. AJA Auditors looked into the NMP’s several processes including registration and certification procedures; course delivery; assessment / examination; documentation, conduct of maritime researches; performance monitoring and assessment; quality planning; library services; provision of resources; performance evaluation of suppliers; and other administrative support services during the audit.
Although there had been some observations and minor corrective action requests (CARs) cited, the audit report recommended NMP for recertification under to ISO 9001:2015 Standard.
Thirty (30) calendar days is given to NMP to submit the plan of action together with the objective evidence in addressing the non-conformance.
During the exit conference with the AJA Auditors on 06 March 2018, NMP Executive Director Romulo V. Bernardes expressed his appreciation to the auditors for their objectivity in the performance of their task. “ NMP will continue to improve its QMS and we know NMP will be growing with you (AJA) being with us,” ED Bernardes disclosed.
It was in 2000 that NMP received its first ISO certification. NMP has continually passed several surveillance and recertification audits until this recent achievement. NMP’s Quality Management Section through its Quality Management Representative is tasked to oversee the compliance of the Agency to its quality management system.
As an Agency that commits to continuous enhancement of seafarers, maintaining ISO Certification of its QMS confirms the Agency’s relevance in carrying out its mandate of upgrading the qualifications of Filipino seafarers and providing maritime industry researches.
AJA Registrars Limited is an independent third party certification body accredited to perform ISO 9001:2015 assessments. ISO 9001:2015 is now well-established as an internationally-recognized QMS standard that provides benefits through continual improvement, consistency in supply and increased marketing power.
ISO 9001 is focused on ensuring that the business delivers a consistent level of quality to its customers by having well defined and regularly reviewed processes and procedures. The system fully integrates within the existing business procedures and becomes part of the culture within the organization.
Meanwhile, NMP continues to upgrade its facilities and provide maritime trainings required pursuant to the STCW Convention as amended in 2010 including value-adding courses towards improving the qualifications of Filipino seafarers for their employment acceptability and enhanced competitiveness. It also regularly conducts maritime studies to come up with policies for the improvement of the manpower sector of the industry.
