The National Maritime Polytechnic (NMP), a leading maritime training and research institution, reports series of remarkable achievements in 2024, underscoring its commitment to excellence in maritime education and research development.
Among the highlights of the year, the institution marked a significant increase in the number of individuals trained, reporting one hundred ninety-six percent (196%) or nineteen thousand six hundred fifty-two (19,652) trainees trained exceeding its annual target of ten thousand (10,000) compared to the previous year.
On the other hand, as a reflection of the institution’s focus on providing industry-relevant education to prepare its students for successful careers in the maritime sector, eighty-seven (87%) (959 out of 1,102) of sample trainees who completed programs at NMP were employed within a year, with seventy-seven percent (77%) (740 out of 959) secured jobs that directly utilized the skills they acquired during training based on NMP’s tracing activity.
The institution continues to enhance its educational offerings with plans to expand its free-of-charge training initiatives following the success of the seven (7) free courses available in 2024. Additionally, approved new courses for development in CY 2025 will further enhance the scope and quality of training programs.
In the area of research, NMP successfully disseminated two (2) research studies completed in 2023: (1) Assessing the Mental Health and Well-being of Filipino Seafarers and Investments in Distance Learning in Philippine Maritime Training Institutions in the Maritime Research Forum held on 20 June 2024 at Hotel H2O, Manila, with ninety-eight (98) participants. These researches were used as input to policy formulation and program development by various stakeholders.
All research initiatives in 2024 also saw completion, with a 100% research project completion rate. These research papers on Maritime Industry Trends: Implications to Employment of Filipino Seafarers in Oceangoing Vessels and Training Needs Analysis of Filipino Migrants Fishers are scheduled to be presented to the industry stakeholders in the CY 2025 forum.
Further, on the operational front, the institution continued its certification process for ISO, ensuring the highest standards in its processes and services. The agency also received an outstanding 95.24% client satisfaction rating for the external services enrolled in its Citizen’s Charter, underscoring the effectiveness and professionalism of its operations in compliance with provisions of the Ease of Doing Business and Efficient Government Service Delivery Act.
As to financial management, the agency achieved a disbursement rate of 99.91% or ₱129,012,439.04 total disbursement out of ₱129,127,826.22 total cash received and a Budget Utilization Rate of 99.42% (MOOE&CO) or ₱130,113,872.78 total obligation as against the ₱130,869,000.00 total allotment for the year.
Looking ahead, NMP is setting its sights on broadening its services to Luzon based on the successful conclusion of a feasibility study, establishing a Davao office, and the processing for NMP’s accreditation application as an Assessment Center.
