TACLOBAN CITY – In a significant stride toward gender equality and women’s empowerment in the maritime industry, the National Maritime Polytechnic (NMP) proudly announces the completion of signatories for the Manifesto of Commitment Towards a Barrier-Free Environment for Filipino Women in Maritime this March 2025—perfectly timed with the celebration of National Women’s Month.

The Manifesto, which rallies key maritime stakeholders in fostering inclusivity, ensuring equal opportunities, and eliminating barriers for women in the sector, was officially sealed by government agencies, maritime education and training institutions, shipping companies, crewing agencies, and maritime associations & organizations. Their collective pledge solidifies a unified front in addressing gender disparities and creating a safe, equitable, and progressive industry for all.

Originally introduced during the Virtual Maritime Stakeholders Forum in May 2023, the Manifesto aligns with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) push for gender equality under the theme “Mobilizing Networks for Gender Equality.” Over the past months, various stakeholders have joined forces to reinforce their commitment through policy development, workplace inclusivity measures, and leadership opportunities for women in the maritime sector.

With the signatories now complete, the commitment shifts toward actionable steps that will drive real change—ranging from ensuring equal access to education and training to strengthening protections against gender-based violence and workplace discrimination.

NMP Executive Director Victor A. Del Rosario emphasized the importance of this milestone, stating, “This Manifesto is more than a symbolic agreement—it is a call to action. As we celebrate Women’s Month, we stand firm in our commitment to fostering an environment where Filipino women in maritime are empowered, supported, and given equal opportunities to thrive.”

The successful completion of the Manifesto signatories highlights a growing momentum in gender advocacy within the maritime sector. As implementation efforts take center stage, NMP and its partners reaffirm their dedication to building a maritime industry where inclusivity is the norm, not the exception.
