TACLOBAN CITY – The National Maritime Polytechnic (NMP) successfully conducted two batches of the Basic Safety Training for Motorboat Handlers/Operators and Fisherfolks with Typhoon Preparedness (BSTMHOF) on February 11-12 and February 13-14, 2025, benefitting a total of 225 participants from Barangay Casuguran, Homonhon Island, Guiuan, Eastern Samar.
The training was conducted in response to the request of Barangay Officials, who recognized the pressing need to equip their constituents with essential safety skills in light of the challenges they face in fishing and coastal risk management.
As part of NMP’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, BSTMHOF aims to promote safety of life at sea by providing participants with vital knowledge on maritime safety. The training covered key topics such as Personal Survival, Fire Prevention and Firefighting, Elementary First Aid, Personal Safety & Social Responsibility, Rules of the Road, Typhoon Awareness, and Marine Safety Requirements. Hands-on exercises on the proper use of life-saving equipment and emergency response procedures were also included to enhance practical skills.
In addition to BSTMHOF, NMP also conducted the following relevant training programs:
- Prevention of Alcohol and Drug Abuse in the Maritime Sector (PADAMS)
- STD/HIV/AIDS Prevention in the Maritime Sector (SHAPIMS)
- Gender Sensitivity Training for Seafarers (GSTS)
Participants expressed appreciation for NMP’s dedication to safety and best practices in the maritime industry, a dedication that is reflected in NMP’s continued work to enhance seafarer and coastal community competence through continuous training.
